Day One: Friday, July 22, 2022
Left Poulsbo about noon heading east across Washington, stopping at sunset for a bite at Pita Pit outside Spokane (NOT recommended). After dinner, we continued northward to Bonners Ferry which is in the Idaho Panhandle and very close to the border.
We made reservations at the Northside School Bed & Breakfast, a delightfully refurbished old brick schoolhouse built in 1914- complete with creaky polished floors, 15’ ceilings, and original doors and railings. It so reminded me of PS 8 that I wondered if they had the long poles with brass ends for opening the windows, lol.
We reserved the “History Room” which was decorated with photos, stories, and decor from old time Bonners Ferry days. There were several other themes to choose from.
Though we arrived pretty late, after being shown around, I headed out for a delightful swim under the stars in a pool all to myself. I walked back over the grass to a bricked walkway up to the rooftop deck where a couple was drinking wine with twinkling lights suspended above. It was lovely! We had to turn on the AC in our room as it was so much warmer at night than at home where summer nights almost always drop into the 50’s.
Adorable, clean, comfy (and inexpensive), we lucked out here. And we hear this week is Kootenai River Days and the fair’s in town along with Saturday Market. Though we’re just here for one night, I bet we’ll be back on a future trip to Canmore.
P.S. We left our house & cat in the care of Heather H, our first time sitter from TrustedHousesitters.com. If all goes well, it could be a game changer for this newly retired couple who were concerned about how to travel leaving a cat at home. If you want a cool way to vacation for free, you can apply to pet sit a cat at an Italian villa or a horse, perhaps, at a Colorado mountain home. How it works is you join as either a homeowner, a sitter or both and pay a very affordable annual fee for unlimited use of the site for a year. Other than that, there’s no cost to either party. (Use the link above and get 25% off the fee.)
